DUNS Resolution Guide

If Your DUNS Application Is Stuck or Rejected, You're Not Alone

A rejected or delayed DUNS application is frustrating, but in the vast majority of cases, the cause is a specific, fixable issue — not a fundamental problem with your business or eligibility. Dun & Bradstreet's own guidance confirms that most application errors come down to outdated documents, inconsistent business information, or details that don't match what's already on file in public or government records, not the underlying legitimacy of the business itself.

This page walks through the most common rejection and delay reasons, organized so you can find your specific situation quickly, along with the actual fix for each.

Important Guidelines

A D-U-N-S Number is always free, and a rejection doesn't mean you need to pay anyone to "fix" it. Scalix Tech is an independent consulting service — we are not affiliated with, endorsed by, or authorized by D&B. We don't charge for the number itself; if you'd like help diagnosing a stuck application, our role is limited to documentation review and guidance.

Primary Rejection Vector

The Most Common Reason: Name or Address Mismatch

By a wide margin, this is the single most frequent cause of delay or rejection across every business type. It happens when your business name or address appears differently across the documents you submit, or differently from what's already on file in public records D&B cross-checks against.

Mismatch Case 01

Abbreviated Suffixes

"ABC Technologies Private Limited" on your Certificate of Incorporation, but "ABC Technologies Pvt Ltd" on your application form.

Mismatch Case 02

Trade Name Conflicts

A trade or brand name used on your website that doesn't match your registered legal name anywhere official.

Mismatch Case 03

Address Format Variations

Address formatting differences — abbreviations, missing details, or outdated addresses that don't match your current GST, MSME, or incorporation documents.

The Structural Fix

Use the exact mailing address and legal name as it appears on your most authoritative document — typically your Certificate of Incorporation, GST certificate, or equivalent registration proof — and make sure every other document and the application form itself matches it precisely, including punctuation and spacing.

Other Common Rejection & Delay Reasons

Scenario 01

Applied Without Checking First

Applying for a new DUNS number when your business already has one creates a duplicate profile, which requires manual intervention from D&B and takes longer to resolve than locating your existing number.

The Fix: Before resubmitting, search the official D&B database to check whether a record already exists — see our guide on checking for an existing DUNS number.

Scenario 02

Mismatched Director Info

D&B cross-checks your application against public ownership records. If director details, ownership structure, or company information have changed but weren't updated in official filings, this can cause delays.

The Fix: Make sure your ROC filings, ownership documents, and company information are all current and accurately reflect your business as it exists today.

Scenario 03

Missing or Down Business Website

D&B's verification process often includes reviewing your business website. If it's incomplete, temporarily down, or missing basic business information, this can hold up your application.

The Fix: Before applying, make sure your website is live, accessible, and includes clear, accurate information about your business (name, address, and what you do).

Scenario 04

Low-Quality Document Scans

A surprisingly common, entirely avoidable cause: blurry, cropped, or partial document images that make verification difficult even when the underlying information is correct.

The Fix: Re-scan or re-upload clear, complete images of every document, making sure no text is cut off at the edges and the image is sharp enough to read every detail.

Scenario 05

D&B Contact Verification Timeout

D&B's verification process often involves reaching out by phone or email to confirm details before issuing your number. Delayed responses to these inquiries are a common, often overlooked reason applications stall.

The Fix: Keep your listed contact phone number and email active and checked regularly during the verification window, and respond to D&B promptly.

Integration Blocks

Platform-Specific Rejection Reasons

If your DUNS-related rejection is actually happening on a platform (Apple, Google Play, or Microsoft Partner Center) rather than during the DUNS application itself, the cause is usually different from a standard D&B rejection:

Apple Developer Program

"Legal Entity Name" error: This happens when the name you enter during Apple enrollment doesn't exactly match what's on file with D&B.

The Fix: Update your D&B profile with the corrected name and continue enrollment — allow up to 2 business days for Apple to receive the update.

Google Play Console

"Organization name doesn't match DUNS profile": Upload a legal document showing your exact entity name and address as listed in your DUNS profile — ideally government-issued.

The Fix: Remember that DUNS profile updates don't automatically sync to Google Play; you need to manually complete the "Update Organization Details" flow in Play Console.

Microsoft Partner Center

DUNS lookup returns "not authorised" or company name rejected: This can be a known D&B-API connection issue on Microsoft's side, even when your DUNS ID works fine on D&B's lookup tool.

The Fix: Switching to manual entry or document upload is often the fastest workaround. Company name rejections are sometimes caused by punctuation (like a comma in "Co.,Ltd.").

Recovery Protocol

How to Actually Resubmit After a Rejection

Follow these structured troubleshooting steps to correct and complete your application:

01

Identify the specific reason for rejection or delay. D&B usually specifies this; for platform-specific issues, check the exact error message against the sections above.

02

Correct the underlying issue at the source — update the document, ROC filing, website, or contact detail that caused the problem, rather than just resubmitting the same information again.

03

Maintain uniform corrections. Make sure your correction is reflected consistently across every document you'll resubmit, not just the one that was originally flagged.

04

Resubmit details or respond to D&B's request with the corrected information promptly.

05

Respond promptly to follow-ups — corrections generally take just a few business days to process once accurate details are submitted, according to D&B's own guidance.

Unverified Intermediary Caveat

A Word of Caution About "Guaranteed Approval" Services

If you come across a service claiming guaranteed approval or "zero rejections" for a fee, treat this with healthy skepticism. Dun & Bradstreet is the sole and exclusive entity authorized to manage DUNS registration in India, and has publicly warned that they don't authorize or partner with third parties to issue numbers on their behalf.

No legitimate service can guarantee an outcome that depends entirely on D&B's own verification process — what a documentation-support service can legitimately help with is making sure your application is clean and consistent before you submit, which genuinely does reduce the likelihood of rejection, without promising an outcome no one can actually control.

Developer FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Why was my DUNS application rejected even though all my information seems correct?

The most common cause is a name or address inconsistency between your documents and your application — even small differences in spelling, punctuation, or formatting can trigger a mismatch, even when the information seems "correct" to you.

How long does it take to fix a rejected application and get approved?

According to D&B's own guidance, corrections typically take just a few business days to process once accurate, consistent details are resubmitted — much faster than the original application timeline, assuming the underlying issue has been properly corrected.

Can I appeal a DUNS rejection, or do I have to start over?

You generally don't need to start a completely new application — correcting the specific issue identified and resubmitting or responding to D&B's request is usually sufficient, rather than beginning the entire process from scratch.

I keep getting rejected for a "name mismatch" but I can't see the difference. What should I check?

Look specifically for: abbreviations ("Pvt Ltd" vs "Private Limited"), missing punctuation, extra spaces, and whether a trade name is being used instead of your registered legal name. Lay your core documents side-by-side and compare character-by-character rather than just glancing at them.

Is a rejection a sign something is wrong with my business?

No — in the vast majority of cases, rejections are caused by documentation inconsistencies or formatting issues, not by anything wrong with the business itself or its eligibility for a DUNS number.

Should I pay a service that guarantees approval?

Be cautious of any guarantee, since approval depends on D&B's own verification process, which no third party controls. A legitimate documentation-support service can reduce your risk of rejection by reviewing your application beforehand, but shouldn't promise a guaranteed outcome.
